Entertainment Weekly's "20 Scariest Movies of All Time"
Not so scary — 2 years ago
I’ve seen a good number of these and don’t think that any of them are as scary as The Grudge or The Ring. I’m finding horror wih roots in Japanese culture to be much scarier than American horror.

I have to agree with you there. I definitely find Asian horror to be scarier than any American horror I’ve seen.
I do enjoy American horror, but I prefer Asian over all. American horror just seems so stereotypical. The classic American horror is great but the newer horror films seem repetitive and boring.
It REALLY kills me when Americans try to remake Asian horror. They completely murder them.

“The Grudge” should be at the top of the list. I saw the movie through my girlfriends hair (covering my eyes with her long hair) :-)

Well...
The Asian originals and the Hollywood versions offer different things. I enjoy both, and I think you just have to keep an open mind. Oh, and you’re right, the Ring and the Grudge should definitely be on this list.

True
I suppose I should emphasis the ‘roots’ part since the movies I mentioned are American versions of Japanese movies. These remakes are scary, but focus on different things than the originals. I thought that Ringu was sad while The Ring was scary. Ju on was not the same as The Grudge either, even though they were the same story. In the case of these movies I liked the American and the original versions.
However I usually agree that the “Americanization” of movies, even if it is just dubbing, is not a good thing.
